In Mongolia, total primary energy supplies continue to be dominated by coal, and electricity generation is largely from coal-fired power plants, particularly combined heat and power plants. In 2018, 93% of all electricity was produced by thermal power plants, and 98% of all district heat was provided by coal-fired systems.
Power Sector Transition in Inner Mongolia
Renewable energy generation increased from 2,730 GWh in 2015 to 7,238 GWh in 2020, with its proportion rising from 3.7% in 2015 to 5.8% in 2020. In 2025, the installed capacity from renewable energy is expected to surpass 50%, and the electricity generation will account for more than 35%.
