The Vanguard program eventually achieved success on March 17, placing Vanguard 1, essentially identical to its hapless predecessor, into orbit. Contributing to the IGY, Vanguard 1, the first solar-powered satellite, determined that the Earth is not a perfect sphere but is somewhat asymmetrical in what has been described as pear-shaped.
