Are We Alone?
During my time at the Open University, I worked with my dear friend and mentor, Prof Barrie Jones, and we decided to put this astronomical faerie tale to the test. We ran a vast number of simulations of the Solar system, tracking the orbits of asteroids and comets, to see what would happen if Jupiter were more or less massive than the giant planet we know and love.

Science Writing
I am currently writing an occasional series on SpaceAustralia about some of astronomy''s great myths, starting with an article on my own work investigating whether Jupiter truly acts as a friend to the Earth ("Jupiter''s Complicated Relationship With Life on Earth", published in October 2021). A screenshot of my catalogue of articles at The ...
Astronomer – The Queensland STEM Education Network
I joined my local astronomical society when I was just eight years old and have been a keen amateur astronomer ever since. I got my first telescope when I was very young (although in the end had to sell it when a new industrial estate was built behind my house, the lights washing out all but the very brightest stars), and have always loved laying out …
Jupiter''s complicated relationship with life on Earth
Professor Jonti Horner from the University of Southern Queensland aims to bust some of those great myths of astronomy and space - starting with the myth that Jupiter protects life on Earth. In reality, it''s a little more complicated than that. Jupiter, captured by Andy Casely/Flickr. Astronomy is a science that fascinates and captivates …
