Aerofoil | SKYbrary Aviation Safety
Description. Figure 1 illustrates a typical aerofoil cross-section for low-speed flight. The airflow over the wing increases its speed causing a reduction in pressure; this generates a force ( lift) perpendicular to the chord of the aerofoil. The airflow below the wing moves much more slowly generating greater pressure and less or negative lift.
NACA Airfoils
NASA. Jan 31, 2017. Image Article. NACA airfoils. National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics airfoils. During the late 1920s and into the 1930s, the NACA developed a series of thoroughly tested airfoils and devised a numerical designation for each airfoil — a four digit number that represented the airfoil section''s critical geometric ...
How to plot the pressure distribution over an airfoil?
Please note that negative values of cp c p produce arrows pointing away from the airfoil, and positive values point towards the airfoil. In all cases, the formula for cp c p is. cp = p −p∞ q∞ c p = p − p ∞ q ∞. p p is the local pressure, p∞ p ∞ is the pressure far away from the airfoil, and q∞ q ∞ is the dynamic pressure far ...
The NACA airfoil series
The early NACA airfoil series, the 4-digit, 5-digit, and modified 4-/5-digit, were generated using analytical equations that describe the camber (curvature) of the mean-line (geometric centerline) of the airfoil section as well as the section''s thickness distribution along the length of the airfoil. Later families, including the 6-Series, are ...
Camber (aerodynamics)
Camber (aerodynamics) In aeronautics and aeronautical engineering, camber is the asymmetry between the two acting surfaces of an airfoil, with the top surface of a wing (or correspondingly the front surface of a propeller blade) commonly being more convex ( positive camber ). An airfoil that is not cambered is called a symmetric airfoil.
Airfoil Design 101: What Is an Airfoil?
An airfoil (or aerofoil in British English) is any structure designed to manipulate the flow of a fluid to produce a reaction, which in an aircraft''s case, is aerodynamic lift. The wings of fixed-wing aircraft feature airfoil-shaped cross-sections. Airfoils enable heavier-than-air flight, but are also in found various other vehicle parts like ...
Airfoil
An airfoil is a surface designed to obtain lift from the air through which it moves. Thus, it can be stated that any part of the aircraft that converts air resistance into lift is an airfoil. The profile of a conventional wing is an excellent example of an airfoil. [Figure 1] Notice that the top surface of the wing profile has greater curvature ...

2.972 How An Airfoil Works
Lift and weight are two of the four forces acting on an airplane, the other two are drag and thrust (see Figure 1). The airplane generates lift using its wings. The cross-sectional shape of the wing is called an airfoil. A typical airfoil and its properties are shown in Figure 2, and are also described below.
3.2.1: Airfoil Nomenclature
zi(x) = C(x) − 1 2E(x). (3.2.1.4) A symmetric airfoil is that in which C(x) = 0∀x. The thickness of the airfoil is the maximum of E(x). The relative thickness of the airfoil is the quotient between thickness and camber, and it is usually expressed in percentage. Figure 3.11: Description of an airfoil with angle of attack.
Airfoil lift and drag polar diagrams
Lift & drag polars. Many of the airfoils have polar diagrams which can be viewed in the details and comparison section sections of the site. These show the change in lift coefficient (Cl), drag coefficient (Cd) and pitching moment (Cm) with angle of attack (alpha). There is also a graph of lift coefficient (Cl) against drag coefficient (Cd ...
NACA airfoil
It played a crucial role in advancing aviation technology, including the development of airfoils, which are the cross-sectional shapes of wings and other aerodynamic surfaces. The NACA airfoil series is a set of standardized airfoil shapes developed by this agency, which became widely used in the design of aircraft wings.

What is an airfoil and how does it work?
Published: May 29, 2023. Sharing is Caring. airfoil, also spelled Aerofoil, shaped surface, such as an airplane wing, tail, or propeller blade, that produces lift and drag when moved through the air. An airfoil produces a lifting force that acts at right angles to the airstream and a dragging force that acts in the same direction as the airstream.
Category : Airfoils and wing cross-sections
Airfoils and wing cross-sections. English: This category is for wing cross-sections and airfoils (alt. aerofoils, sometimes called wing profiles ). In a strict sense, an airfoil is the geometry of a wing profile. The word is also used to designate profiles from other wing-like devices (sails, turbine blades, etc).

An airfoil (American English) or aerofoil (British English) is a streamlined body that is capable of generating significantly more lift than drag. Wings, sails and propeller blades are examples of airfoils. Foils of similar function designed with water as the working fluid are called hydrofoils. When oriented at a suitable angle, a solid body moving through a fluid deflects …
